Dive into Puerto del Carmen’s Underwater World

In Lanzarote, slipping beneath the surface reveals a completely different side of the island. Clear waters, volcanic formations and colourful marine life create an underwater landscape that is every bit as captivating as the scenery above.

From Seaside Los Jameos in Puerto del Carmen, some of the island’s most remarkable snorkelling spots are just a short distance away. The hotel’s location makes it simple to combine beach days, hiking routes and visits to small coves and volcanic seabeds, where marine nature reveals itself in all its beauty.

Here is a selection of some of the must-visit spots for exploring Lanzarote’s underwater world:

Best for beginners and families

  • PLAYA DE LOS POCILLOS. Just a few steps from the hotel, Playa de Los Pocillos is ideal for anyone new to snorkelling, thanks to its easy access and generally calm waters. Beneath the surface, sandy seabeds give way to rocky patches where species such as white seabream, damselfish and, occasionally, moray eels can be spotted.

  • PLAYA CHICA. Long regarded as one of Lanzarote's finest snorkelling and diving sites, Playa Chica is renowned for its exceptional water clarity and abundant marine life. Beneath the surface, dramatic lava formations provide shelter for octopus, cuttlefish and shimmering shoals of fish.

  • PLAYA DE MATAGORDA. With its relaxed atmosphere and generally calm waters, Playa de Matagorda is another excellent choice for exploring the seabed at an unhurried pace. Its sandy areas and scattered rocky sections provide opportunities to spot colourful fish, small rays and other marine life close to shore.

For experienced snorkellers

  • PLAYA DEL BARRANCO DEL QUÍQUERE.Tucked between Puerto del Carmen and Puerto Calero, this wilder, more natural spot is reached by making your way down via a rocky path. Entering the water can be challenging, so we recommend this spot only for experienced snorkellers wearing suitable footwear and when sea conditions are calm. Its rocky seabed attracts a remarkable variety of marine life, rewarding experienced snorkellers with one of the area's most natural underwater settings.

For confident swimmers

  • PLAYA PUERTO CALERO. The rocky coastline around Puerto Calero offers clear water and rewarding snorkelling opportunities. As access is mainly via volcanic rocks and pebble coves rather than sandy beaches, this area is best suited to confident swimmers who are comfortable entering and exiting the water over uneven terrain.

Off the beaten track

  • PLAYA QUEMADA. If you are looking to escape the crowds, Playa Quemada reveals a wilder side of Lanzarote. Black volcanic sand, rugged underwater landscapes and a sense of tranquillity combine to create a setting that feels wonderfully untouched.

Top Tips for Snorkelling in Puerto del Carmen

You do not need any previous experience or a high level of fitness to enjoy snorkelling in Puerto del Carmen. Its calm waters, shallow areas and pleasant climate for much of the year make it an accessible activity for almost everyone. Even so, it is worth keeping a few tips in mind to enjoy the sea comfortably and safely.

fins and goggles
  • THE RIGHT SNORKELING GEAR.For a comfortable experience, all you need is good basic equipment: a mask or goggles, a snorkel and fins. On volcanic rocks wear reef shoes. Although many people snorkel in just a swimsuit or bikini, the water can cool the body more quickly than expected, especially after spending time floating. For that reason, wearing a T-shirt or a neoprene top can make all the difference. If you already have your own equipment, it is worth checking it before you travel. A well-fitting mask, comfortable fins and equipment in good condition can make a noticeable difference once you're in the water.

  • BEFORE ENTERING THE WATER.Before entering the water, it is always worth checking the sea conditions and choosing calm areas with good visibility and no currents. Although many beaches in Lanzarote often offer favourable conditions, the wind, tides and swell can change throughout the day. You should also never snorkel alone. Always go with a companion and keep an eye on one another while you are in the water. When exploring a new spot, pay attention to local signs and check whether any specific safety recommendations apply. Signs, buoys and flags provide useful information and help you enjoy the surroundings safely and with greater peace of mind.

  • ENJOYING THE SEA AT YOUR OWN PACE.One of the most important things when snorkelling is to listen to your body and avoid overestimating your physical ability. It is easy to cover longer distances than expected or spend more time in the water than planned without really noticing. It is also important to protect yourself properly from the sun, stay hydrated and avoid carrying anything you do not need. In the end, the best experience is one that allows you to enjoy the ocean calmly, safely and with respect for the natural environment.
