Discover the secret of the volcanoes: The Wines of Lanzarote

Sep 30, 2024

If there is one thing that sums up the characteristics of Lanzarote's natural landscape, it is its vineyards, the fruit of the island's unique and peculiar volcanic nature.

Lanzarote's vineyards, planted on land covered with volcanic ash, have been conditioned to allow the grapes to grow perfectly. These formations, known as terraces, improve the quality of Lanzarote's wines, despite the island's adverse weather conditions, such as the wind and the salt from the sea. Made up of holes, stone walls or both, this type of cultivation has become a characteristic feature of the island's natural landscape

Malvasía, the essence of Lanzarote's wines

The star of these vineyards is the Malvasía grape, the jewel of Lanzarote's viticulture and the essence of the island's wines. This variety, grown in the unique conditions of the volcanic soils, produces wines of exceptional quality. The wines of Lanzarote, with their distinctive flavour and captivating aroma, reflect the resistance of the Malvasia grape and the unique character of the region.

Exploring the wines of Lanzarote through the charm of its wineries

Lanzarote has several nationally and internationally renowned wineries. Some of the best known wineries on the island are:

  • Bodega El Grifo. This is the oldest winery in the Canary Islands and one of the five oldest wineries in Spain. It is located in the protected area of ‘La Geria’ which was covered with lava and ashes after the volcanic eruptions of the island. This winery has a museum, where you can find more than 500 preserved pieces with the history of Lanzarote and Canarian oenology. They also have a Wine Bar and offer different types of experiences and tours to enjoy the history and flavour of Lanzarote's wines.

  • Bodega Vega de Yuco is a traditional Canarian winery that combines authenticity and innovation. The winery reveals genuine wines, very expressive and with a unique essence. Their wines are also well known for their beautiful blue bottles and numerous awards and medals.  The winery, surrounded by volcanoes, is located in the middle of the Tese hill, 1 kilometre from the village of Masdache and in the direction of the municipality of Tías, next to the Natural Park of the Volcanoes and the Protected Landscape of La Geria

  • Bodega Stratvs. This winery, located in the municipality of Yaiza, is one of the largest in Lanzarote. It has more than 50 hectares of vineyards and offers a wide range of wines, from dry and fruity whites to intense and complex reds. It also has a wine shop and a restaurant where you can taste its products. If the shop is already beautiful, the restaurant is not to be missed.

  • Bodega La Geria. Located in the Timanfaya National Park, this winery stands out for its unique architecture and its commitment to sustainability. La Geria produces high quality wines from native Lanzarote grape varieties such as Malvasía and Listán Negro. The bodega also has a wine shop and a restaurant where you can enjoy the wines along with traditional Canarian dishes.

  • Bodega Vulcano. Located in the municipality of Tinajo, this bodega is known for its signature wines made by oenologist Alberto González Plasencia. The bodega produces wines with their own character and personality, using innovative techniques in the production and ageing of its wines. The winery also has a tasting room where you can sample its wines and learn more about the winemaking process.

  • Bodega Los Bermejos. Located in the municipality of San Bartolomé, this winery is known for its high-quality wines made with indigenous varieties such as Malvasía and Listán Negro. Los Bermejos has won several national and international awards and recognitions, which has contributed to its popularity. The winery has a wine shop where you can buy its products and a tasting room where you can taste its wines and learn more about its history. An experience we highly recommend.

All of these wineries offer tastings and guided tours, the best way to get to know the wines of Lanzarote. These are just some of the most famous in Lanzarote. However, the island has a wide variety of wineries and quality wines that reflect the richness and diversity of its wine heritage.

When it comes to wine brands on Lanzarote, most of them reflect the name of the winery, such as La Geria Manto Malvasía Volcánica, Vulcano Dolce or Bermejo Maceración Carbónica. In addition to the Malvasía variety, the Moscatel variety is also used to a lesser extent.

If you are interested in taking some of these wines home with you, please note that the prices of Lanzarote wines vary according to their typology and depending on whether they are regular wines or limited editions.
